4 Key Areas to Consider
Lighting
The goal of any indoor tennis lighting system should be to have the highest possible light levels with as little visual disruption to the players as possible.
In order to achieve this, the best strategy is to look to organizations that specialize in, and have had extensive experience working in, a variety of indoor tennis structures and have provided customized solutions to meet the needs of the end users.
Not all tennis facilities are the same, and not all expectations at each facility will be the same. It is important for you as a university to decide exactly what your expectations are of a new lighting system and what you want to achieve with the new system.
NCAA Best Lighting Practices
What are Foot Candles?
A foot candle is a measurement of light intensity. One foot candle is defined as enough light to saturate a one-foot square with one lumen of light.
Our team recommends that when testing light levels for an indoor tennis court you should follow a 15-point method to efficiently record levels at your facility. These readings should be taken with a light meter in order to follow standard practice within the tennis community.
Sports Interiors has both the capabilities to provide before and after readings on all projects as well as offer guidance on best practices on an individual facility evaluation.
2. Liner System
The best way to mimic outdoor lighting conditions without the visual distraction of a direct lighting source is to install an indirect LED lighting system. For an indirect lighting system to deliver optimum performance, it should be coupled with a highly reflective and durable material applied to the ceiling and walls. This liner will not only help to further increase light levels, but ensure even distribution of light across the playing area.
Reasons to consider a Liner System at your facility
Durability of System
Is it resilient against tennis balls or other objects that might come into contact with it?
Does it improve maintenance costs?
Does it have a long-lasting service lift?
Image and appearance enhancement
Does it improve both the tennis playing experience and the overall interior appearance of the facility?
Does it ‘cover’ unsightly dust collecting or stains on the structure of the facility?
Does it reduce shadows over the tennis courts and around the tennis area?
Acoustic Management
Does it absorb noise and sound?
Can it assist in minimizing distractions for players competing?
Does it make it easier for coaches and staff to instruct and converse?
3. Comprehensive Implementation
Whether you are considering new lighting, liner, or both at your facility, a key consideration should be the implementation process. We understand that facilities are in use 24/7 throughout the year and the more your provider can do as part of the installation process the easier it is for coordination, communication, and implementation.
Many organizations offer some services, with other parts being either subcontracted out of left up to the facility to manage.
Sports Interiors has a designated operations team that handles all the planning, preparation, and communication leading up to the start of a project. Each project has a team of Sports Interiors personnel carefully planning the installation process to ensure that we minimize disruption to facility operations. Since we handle everything including the installation, we can be very quick with getting in and out of a club and flexible in that we can work around scheduled court times. This has allowed us to continue doing installations through the peak of the indoor tennis season as we’ve worked with some of the busiest clubs in the country.
4. Indoor Tennis Facility Options
An indoor tennis facility available on campus during inclement weather allows tennis teams the ability to efficiently continue practice, training, and hold matches without having to pack up and travel to the nearest facility with indoor tennis courts. Building a new indoor tennis facility involves a lot of planning and especially fundraising. The good news for colleges and universities that are faced with the problem of accessibility to indoor tennis facilities is that there are more affordable alternatives to building a traditional steel-frame structure.
Steel Frame Structure
These buildings cost more to construct than other options, but they offer better insulation
They can be insulated for winter efficiency and air-conditioned for summer use
If the building is well maintained, it can last longer than other facility options
Air-Supported Structure
Air-supported structures, commonly known as bubbles or domes, are relatively inexpensive and efficient to construct
These facilities usually are comprised of a single or multi-layered fabric and offer an alternative option to traditional buildings
They are assembled and supported using air blowers, which are also used to ventilate and control the climate within the bubble
Fabric Structure
Fabric frame structures are particularly useful if courts need to be covered all year-round. These structures are more expensive to install than air-supported options, but in the long run thanks to their superior insulation, they will offer substantial savings
Fabric frame structures are modular and usually cover between one and four courts but can be designed to cover as many courts as necessary
Fabric frame structures have a longer lifespan than air-supported structures. The fabric usually lasts for 15-20 years, with the framework lasting up to 40 years
